Light Detector is a simple and useful app for people with visual impairments that measures ambient light levels using the smartphone camera. The app converts light brightness into an audio signal: the brighter the light, the higher and louder the sound; in darkness, the sound becomes quieter, lower, or disappears completely.
The app allows blind and low-vision users to “hear” light—detect whether a lamp is on, curtains are open, daylight is coming through a window, or a screen or device indicator is lit. This is especially helpful when navigating unfamiliar spaces, checking equipment, or assessing lighting conditions indoors.
Light Detector requires no internet connection, operates quickly and reliably, and its interface is fully compatible with VoiceOver, making it accessible to screen readers. The app launches with a single tap and immediately begins analyzing light without additional setup.
